Friends Of Ginkgo

Mission
“Friends of Ginkgo” was created in 2022 with the mission of bringing residents, neighborhood managers, and pharmacies together to create a socially and environmentally sustainable community. It addresses the pollutions posed by Gingko nuts while giving elderly residents a source of income and also benefits local pharmacies.

Initiatives
The golden Ginkgo trees has always been a signature scenery of Beijing’s autumn. However, the Ginkgo nuts from these trees drop during the same season, releasing an unpleasant odor when stepped on and also causes the roads to become sticky and difficult to clean. In my community, there are hundreds Gingko trees, causing heavy discomfort. Such a cyclical issue constantly annoys the residents, leading to the initiation of “Friends of Ginkgo”.
Complication
Ginkgo nuts hold pharmaceutical value for conditions like asthma, promoting elderly people collect them to gather them for income, selling at 10-20 CNY per kilogram.
However, they often wait until the ground is covered with nuts due to the challenge of transporting large quantities to pharmacies, resulting in the nuts being stepped on and releasing odor.

Target Population
The primary target population for “Friends of Ginkgo” is the low-income elderly residents of my neighborhood. Since my neighborhood is close to many schools, a lot of elderly people come from rural areas to take care of their grandchildren. They barely have any income, so they rely on methods such as recycling cardboards to make some income.
Action
Recognizing that transportation was the key issue, I reached out to the neighborhood managers of a local pharmacy and set up a designated selling spot in our neighborhood. Here, the elderly drop off their packages of Gingko nuts, and the pharmacy’s truck collects them at regular intervals. A major portion of the profit from the nuts is then distributed among the elderly collectors. As a result, the collectors came more frequently and collected fresher nuts.

Significance
“Friends of Ginkgo”, from the collecting to selling, includes a closed cycle that involves many groups like the elderly, community managers, pharmacy managers, and other residents.
The elderlies GAIN a stable income;
The pharmacies GAIN a stable supplier;
The community GAIN a certain amount of profit while also reducing the work of cleaning;
The residents GAIN a better environmental condition;

Social Impact
Based on demographic data and understanding the community's dynamics, “Friends of Ginkgo” directly has been benefitting 120+ elderly residents per year since 2022. These individuals gained access to a stable source of income through the harvesting and sale of Gingko nuts.
The ripple effects of “Friends of Ginkgo” are also be felt across the entire neighborhood, indirectly benefiting the broader population of around 3,000+ residents. By mitigating the unpleasant odor and fostering a cleaner, environment, the overall quality of life is enhanced. Moreover, since the project gained approval from the Haidian subdistrict office due to the replicable nature of the project, the social impact can scale exponentially, empowering other communities to adapt.
The project, titled “Environmental Justice: Solving Community Gingko Nut Pollution Issue”, won international 3rd Place in the Social Innovation Project Incubator (SIPI).
